DiS/ORDER took part in a 10-day workshop dedicated to problems of painting in contemporary art. Participants ought to use traditional painting materials.
Featured video is a result of the lab.
The whole object consists of 144 small canvases composing a quadrangularnon-figurative picture of about seven square meters. The individual canvases make a reference to the digital units – pixels. In addition to the final installation of the canvases on the wall, the artists’ experiment consisted in creating a video using the stop motion animation technology (developing a succession of stills by hand, and photographing each one).
“Re-Animation” is the artists’ search of the answer to the key M17 Lab’s question – “Did the painting die?” The artists consider a possibility of synthesis of modern and traditional imagery techniques as opposed to a more typical war between them.
In addition, the animated material makes a reference to the “animation” of a static image, that is a new opportunity to “animate” fine art.
